NEIA’s 8th Grade Graduation was a night full of joy and inspiration—an evening that perfectly reflected the 8th grade class.
The celebration began with a dinner menu chosen by the 8th graders themselves: a delicious meal of chicken and waffles. It set the tone for an evening rooted in student voice.
Each 8th grader took the stage to share a personal speech, offering reflections on their time in Middle School and hopes for the future. Their words were filled with humor, gratitude, and wisdom beyond their years. Layla, one of the graduates, captured the balance of lightheartedness and insight with a memorable reference to a classmate: “Like Haripriya’s quote in art, YOLO.” She continued with advice that resonated well beyond her peers: “Even the adults and staff—even though you’re older—that shouldn’t be a reason to not take risks in life.”
The speeches were followed by remarks from Tamara, NEIA’s Director of Upper School and Interim Director of Middle School, who praised the 8th graders for the energy and curiosity they brought to campus. “You have made middle school a more lively and more curious place,” she said, celebrating the students not just for who they’ve become, but for how they’ve shaped the school community.
A particularly moving moment of the evening came when Layla performed Billy Joel’s “Vienna.” Tamara later referenced the lyrics in her speech, highlighting the line, “You’re so ambitious for a juvenile,” and adding with a smile, “Which is what we love about you.” She reminded the students that while ambition is powerful, there’s beauty in taking one’s time: “Vienna is waiting for you. You don’t need to rush.”
The evening closed with awards and applause, leaving families, staff, and friends proud and inspired. They reminded us of the importance of pausing to enjoy the journey.
