Nature Hacks: Biomimicry Innovation Track
Nature Hacks is an intensive program where students discover that nature has already solved most of humanity’s toughest engineering challenges. Participants will explore how a kingfisher’s beak inspired high-speed trains, how gecko feet led to revolutionary adhesives, and how termite mounds are cooling buildings without air conditioning, then apply these same nature-inspired strategies to design their own innovative solutions. Led by experienced environmental professionals and NEIA faculty, students will study organisms and ecosystems in the field, reverse-engineer nature’s genius in the lab, and present breakthrough designs that could change the future. This dynamic program offers aspiring scientists, engineers, and innovators an exciting introduction to the exciting field of biomimicry, where biology becomes technology, and the innovative approach that defines New England Innovation Academy.
Anna Schonwald – Nature Hacks Instructor
Anna is a scientist who has taught everywhere from kindergarten classrooms to actual radio telescope arrays in New Mexico and she believes the best learning happens when students are leading the way and making awesome mistakes. With degrees in Physics, Geology, and Earth Sciences, she knows how planets form and how forces work, but she’s way more interested in flipping traditional science class on its head and letting you discover things through your own experiments and inventions. This summer, she’ll help you unlock nature’s 3.8 billion years of engineering secrets and turn them into your own breakthrough innovations.
